EasyMesh: Making Wi-Fi Simple

Estimated Reading Time: 2 Minutes

Nowadays, people rely on home WiFi, especially with the increasing presence of smart devices in homes. Mesh routers provide whole-home coverage by combining multiple routers into one network. However, a major limitation of traditional mesh networks is that all routers must be from the same manufacturer, restricting consumer choices.

Fortunately, the WiFi Alliance introduced EasyMesh, a new standard allowing routers from different manufacturers to work together. With EasyMesh, as long as two routers support EasyMesh, they can be integrated into the same network, offering greater flexibility and choice for consumers.

What EasyMesh Does

EasyMesh works by creating a big Wi-Fi network made up of lots of smaller parts. These parts called access points, work together like a team to give you Wi-Fi coverage everywhere in your home. Unlike old Wi-Fi boosters that make new networks, EasyMesh keeps everything connected under one network name, so you don’t have to switch between different Wi-Fi signals.

In a mesh WiFi network, there are three key components:

  • Controller: Every EasyMesh network requires a controller, which serves as the central hub for managing the network. It connects to all agents, either directly or indirectly. The controller can be a standalone device or integrated into another device with additional functionality.
  • Agents: Agents are essential for creating a mesh network. At least two agents must be connected to the controller. They help extend the network coverage and relay data between devices.
  • Device: This refers to any component within the mesh network, which can include a controller, an agent, or both. The controller is commonly integrated into the router or another wireless access point. However, it can also exist as a separate device. In cases where multiple devices have controller functionality, only one can serve as the primary controller for the network.
